Sharie mentions that “a bad process is still better than no process, because at least with a bad process there’s something to work with!” She then goes on to explain this and ties it into the top 8-9 reasons people leave an organization. Did you know that compensation is only one and it’s not even the highest reason!?
In crediting her background with working with organizations between 5 and 50 employees, and her education, she knows how crucial hiring is as it directly impacts the business’s bottom line and cash flow.
Sharie Flores, MBA, owner of MT Strategies and expert in hiring, culture, and talent management, tells some cautionary tales. She starts with one about a bad hire that resulted from not calling references. Many, many hiring professionals don’t call references. You’re going to want to hear what happened to Sharie when she neglected to call references of a key hire. She said that learning from this experience has been a turning point for her in her entrepreneurial journey.
Sharie mentions the book Who by Geoff Smart. In this instant New York Times Bestseller, Geoff Smart and Randy Street provide a simple, practical, and effective solution to what The Economist calls “the single biggest problem in business today”: unsuccessful hiring
Matt talks about the Taboo Business Question topic of Hiring as he outlines in his book. There’s these signs that entrepreneurs are supposed to hire. There’s five in the book, but the one that Matt details is “Diversifying Revenue.” Hiring can be a nonstarter for some people, but if they can overcome the fear associated with hiring, it can be the greatest way to grow an organization.
Her second cautionary tale is related to her experience working with a high growth investment company in their accounting and finance division. They had gotten a big project that needed to be delivered on just in March or April of 2020. Through a recruiting company, they went from 35 employees to over 100 employees in under 30 days. Mostly warehouse folks. And, there’s an expensive lesson to be learned in using a recruiting company for this type of hypergrowth.

Matt recaps the issues from episode 1 related to this financial services firm that hit a hiring wall. They had 12 employees and struggled to grow. They’d hire a few more people, and then a few would leave. They’d interview and train a few more. Guess what!? A few would leave. It was a revolving door of employees and so the firm buoyed at 12 employees for a while.
In this episode, Sharie talks about her solutions for companies she works with that have the same issue of employee selection, training, and development. All of these topics fall under HR Leadership and Talent Management. Her unique solutions are so practical and just make so much sense!
